Our long return flight. 25 hours from Kuala Lumpur to Portland.
We just got back from our adventure in Asia, and it was an awesome, amazing, incredible trip. We had so much fun, explored so many places, ate way too much delicious food, and met loads of interesting people. Here’s a quick round-up of our Asian adventures, but you’ll hear much more about the trip as the year goes on.
Days traveled: 43
Airports visited: 13
Frequent flyer miles spent on flights: 280,000 (we saved for quite a while!)
Miles traveled: 26,199
New passport stamps: 16
Countries visited: China (7 days), Thailand (only 1 night, so it really doesn’t count), Indonesia (11 days), Malaysia (11 days), Myanmar (12 days)
Miles walked: about 120
Days we didn’t have to set an alarm: about 5 (why we called it an adventure, not a vacation…)
# of bird species identified: 118 (most were new to us!)
A few of our many favorite things from each country:
- China: the Great Wall, and the Xi’an arts district pedestrian mall
- Indonesia: seeing orangutans in the wild and playing hours and hours of cards with our friends Stacie and Steve
- Malaysia: old town Kuala Lumpur, snorkeling in the Perhentian Islands
- Myanmar: Shwedagon Pagoda and the historic temples of Bagan

Cooking school near Inle Lake, Myanmar
Favorite new foods: rendang, gado-gado, and shan noodle salad, some of which we can even cook for you if you want!
Number of kind, interesting, and awesome people we met: too many to count!
We feel so lucky to have been able to take this trip, and we’re looking forward to sharing more details about our adventures later on, but if you’re interested in hearing about something or someplace in particular, leave us a note in the comments. Enjoy your next trip, whether it’s for a week or a weekend!
